1 mil = 25.4 μm = 0.0254 mm

Same units ≠ same measured layers

A figure including a removable liner cannot be compared directly with installed film thickness. Check the measurement basis on both specifications.

A QUICK WALK-THROUGH

How to use this converter

  1. Enter the thickness and select the unit printed on the specification.
  2. Read the equivalent value in mil, microns (μm) and millimetres.
  3. Select the stated measurement basis. If you want to discuss supply, choose a product type below the result.

How the calculation works

1 mil = 0.001 inch = 25.4 microns (μm) = 0.0254 mm. 1 mm = 1,000 μm. A mil is not a millimetre.

Unit reference: NIST general tables of units of measurement.

A worked example

7.5 mil converts to 190.5 μm or 0.1905 mm. 8.5 mil converts to 215.9 μm or 0.2159 mm. The conversion works for any film type. These are unit conversions, not statements of available OptimumWrap product specifications.

Before you place an order

The conversion does not determine the measured layers, manufacturing tolerance or protective performance. Confirm whether the figure covers the film, adhesive, top coat or a removable liner. Compare measurements made on the same basis.

Is 8 mil the same as 8 mm?

No. 8 mil is 0.2032 mm, or 203.2 μm. “Mil” means one thousandth of an inch.

Does a thicker PPF automatically offer better protection?

Thickness is one specification. Film construction, coating, adhesive, test method and installation also matter. Request the technical information for the actual product.
