What is the difference between 7.5 mil and 8.5 mil PPF?
7.5 mil is 190.5 microns; 8.5 mil is 215.9 microns. The difference is 25.4 microns, provided both figures measure the same layers. Before comparing two films, check whether the quoted thickness covers the face film alone or includes the adhesive. A larger number on a price list does not, by itself, tell you which film suits the job.
Mil, microns and millimeters
A mil is one thousandth of an inch. It is not a millimeter. One mil equals 25.4 microns (μm), so multiply a mil value by 25.4 to convert it to microns.

Which layers are being measured?
A roll may include a removable protective sheet, a coated face film, adhesive and a release liner. The data sheet needs to say which of these are included in its thickness figure.
For example, Avery Dennison’s PrismaPro product data sheet lists a 7.5 mil face film and describes an 8.5 mil construction. Those figures appear in the same product document. They illustrate why the layer definition matters; they are not specifications for OptimumWrap film.
What to compare on two quotations

If you measure a sample yourself, record the instrument, sample preparation and measurement points. Agree a procedure before using those readings to accept or reject a supply batch. A measurement through the liner cannot be compared directly with one taken without it.
Is thicker PPF always the better choice?
Thickness is one part of the specification. It does not tell you the adhesive behavior, appearance on a curve, resistance to a particular exposure or warranty coverage. Compare those items separately, then have your installer assess the exact film on a suitable test panel.
Keep finish and thickness as separate decisions. For Clear PPF, choose the gloss or matte appearance you want first. For Color PPF, keep the color reference with the specification so the sample and quotation describe the same product.
How to ask for 7.5 mil or 8.5 mil Clear PPF
