Film Thickness Explained: What Does 7.5mil Mean?
Thickness affects durability, conformability and price. Learn to read mil and micron values.
Film thickness is one of the most quoted specs in wrapping — and one of the most misunderstood.
Units
- mil — 1/1000 of an inch. 7.5mil ≈ 0.19mm ≈ 190 microns
- micron (μm) — 1/1000 of a millimeter
What the numbers mean
- 6–7.5mil — standard TPU color change film range
- 8mil+ — thicker films, more protection, harder to stretch
- Under 6mil — lighter films, easier on curves but less protective
Thicker is not always better
A thicker film provides more stone-chip protection but is harder to wrap around complex curves and may telegraph less smoothly. Choose thickness by application: show cars, daily drivers and protection-focused projects each have an ideal range.
